54 Things

A few months ago I was browsing a few of my favorite blogs and came across an older article by Karina Allrich, @gluten-free Goddess. Her post was "Fifty Five Things I've Learned in 55 Years". Kind Women never reveal other women's actual ages so go read the article and figure that out for yourselves.  I decided that in honor of my 54th birthday I would lift her idea and come up with a list of my own.

I must confess that there are a few of these are taken from Karina's list. Only because she said it so eloquently that I decided to quote her. Therefore those items in quotes are from her list. Guess that makes them doubly good ideas.

Therefore as today is my Fifty Fourth birthday the following is a list of 54 things I've learned in 54 years.

  1.       There is a still small voice in there and it’s worth listening to.
  2.       Good morning is a relative point of view.
  3.       Learning from our mistakes is almost always messy.
  4.       If you're allergic to Fill in the Blank, quit whining and get over it. Trust me, it could be worse.
  5.       If someone wants to “Tell you something, in Christian Love.” Cut and run!
  6.       The most expensive things you will ever buy will be something “cheap”.
  7.       When fighting the urge to interrupt. Ask yourself, am I hearing what they are saying?
  8.       Cheese and wine are a meal for a romantic.
  9.       Lost trust is hard to find again.
10.        The skin I came here with is good enough for me to go out in.
11.        “Coffee is going to be the next miracle drug.”
12.        Sex for Women is like exercise. You can do it alone but it tends to be non productive.
13.        Pretending to not be hostile is a load of bull.
14.        Sexy is a personal point of view.
15.        Listen, even in a quiet room, you’ll be amazed at what you hear.
16.        Your children are a work in progress, when it’s finished they belong with someone else.
17.        Gracefully aging is the best way to overcome an awkward youth.
18.        Living well is still the best revenge.
19.        No one over 50 really wants to re-live their adolescents through mid 20s.
20.        Everyone has more than one family.
The one you are born to and the one you create from those that you treasure in your life.
21.        Breakfast is essential, just not before 8 AM.

26.        Divorce is possible, only because murder is illegal.
27.        An artist never really finishes his work, he merely abandons it.
28.        “A sense of humor is way sexier than six pack abs.”
29.        Life is short enough; enjoy what you can, when it’s there.
30.        Walk the walk you talk.

35.        Saying no won’t end their world, it may make yours better.
36.        Every person believes their own point of view is the correct point of view. Accepting this
            can free you.

38.        If you don't value your time, no one else will either.
39.        The food we loved as kids really doesn’t taste right anymore.
40.        There has only been one perfect person, and we crucified him.
41.        Curiosity keeps you young.

43.       "You can live without TV" but you'll miss Doctor Who (Fill in your favorite(s)).
44.        “A woman over fifty is invisible. Those of you over fifty know what I'm talking about. So
            Take advantage of it.”

46.        “Love and weddings are fragile human gifts every person deserves. Straight or gay.”
47.        Hope is more important than belief.
48.        “Calling hot flashes "power surges" is also lipstick on a pig.” How about “Personal
            Summer?”
49.        “There's a reason you lose your close-up vision as you age. It softens imperfections. And
keeps the chin hairs out of focus.”

51.        Of all that you do the one thing people will remember is your kindness.
52.        If you plan something really exactly, God will laugh at you.
53.        Act with a higher purpose. If it doesn’t serve your goal it’s a wasted effort.
54.        Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
